Kalbar is a small, country town that is about a 10km drive from Boonah, 45km from Ipswich and
80km from Brisbane. It is in the Fassifern Valley, directly north of Mount French and just a few kilometers east of
the Cunningham Highway.
HISTORY OF
KALBAR
Kalbar has stunning views of the Scenic Rim as well as fertile soil. The Kalbar area was
originally chosen by German immigrants who used it to create productive farms from the fertile and scrub-covered
country. This was done through pure hard work and determination. The a rea around Kalbar was part of the Fassifern
pastoral run in 1842 and was later opened up for farm selections in 1871. August Engels opened up a store in his hut in the early 1870s. A
school was then started closeby which then marked the beginning of the town of Engelsburg. However once the
First World War took place there was much ill feeling towards German names which led to the changing of most.
Therefore the name Engelsburg was changed to Kalbar in 1916. Kalbar is named after an Aboriginal word said to
mean 'shining place' or 'bright'. However there is an earlier interpretation that states the name as meaning
'dead' or 'star'.
When the referendum was held in 1899 to decide if Australia should become a federation, Kalbar
had the highest amount of "no" votes in all of Queensland.
By the year 1900 there was a primary school, four churches and a few stores and tradespeople in
the town. The school of arts was later opened in 1906.
Maize was the primary crop grown in the area. Later dairy also
become a major industry which led to the opening of a dairy factory in around 1900. As the dairy industry
increased this meant an increase in fodder crops and reduction in maize. Although the town didn't have a
railway until 1916, it was very self-reliant. In 1926 Kalbar and District Agricultural and Pastoral
Association was formed.
In 1960 the railway closed which led to a decline in the dairy industry. This led to dairy
properties being transformed into irrigated agriculture which meant that potatoes soon became an important crop to
the region. There is a bulk grain storage facility at Kalbar that is used for oil seeds.
