JIMBOOMBA
Jimboomba is quite an important commercial centre that provides for the fast developing rural-residential
housing estates that are popping up in many Scenic Rim Shire areas. It is located on the Mount Lindesay Highway
about halfway between the Brisbane suburb of Browns Plains and the town of Beaudesert. Jimboomba
was part of the Beaudesert Shire until 2008 when it became part of Logan City.
It is believed that the name "Jimboomba" was derived from an Aborginal expression which possibly described an
edible grub or a booming type sound.
In 1845 the Gimbooma pastoral run was started. Later, the town spelt "Jimboomba" was settled on creeks that run
into the Logan River which is around two kilometres from the town centre. In 1888 the railway from Beaudesert to
Bethania Junction began operating and then in 1890 the primary school opened. The railway line meant that Jimboomba
was connected with Logan and Brisbane which allowed their produce and livestock to be sold at market. At this stage
Jimboomba was more of a village with only a store, pub and farmers/timber-getters as
residents.
The 1980s saw a rise in the town's population. However it still only had around 500 people in the town in 1985
Despite this, a modern shopping centre was. The town also had a reticulated water supply connected to businesses
and homes in 1988. The shopping centre has grown in four stages and now hosts 37 shops as well as a Mitre 10
hardware. There is also another shopping centre, the smaller Jimboomba Junction, which is home to 17 shops.
The town is home to Jimboomba State Primary School, Emmaus College (primary school) and
Queensland International College (primary and high school). It also has a council library (which also serves as a
shire administration branch), golf course, sports playing fields and industrial estate on the northern outskirts.
Businesses in town include a hotel and medical/dental services as well as the previously mentioned shopping centres
while also having fire, ambulance and police services.
The main industries in Jimboomba are dairy farming, hobby farms and the grazing of cattle. There are also a
large amount of horses in the region that are owned for riding, pleasure or competition.
